There’s a place near Gettysburg
Where righteous blood was tossed
Flowers grew where everything seemed lost

And Becky’s father’s brother knew
Someone’s lost kin
Her mother cut flowers for him

But Becky seems so lost
She can’t find her way
Some days she can’t recall her name

And they’re tearing down the mission and everything within
They’re going to put a plaque right where it’s been
God have mercy on their souls and all their wretched skin
Cause they’re tearing down the mission again

The river was the anchor deep
And love to bind the flock
The sinners built a temple out of rock

It towered high like stars at night
To shelter them within
The people sang loud and holy hymns

Songs of inspiration
Songs of hope and pain
But now they’re lost along the Seine

Cause they’re burning down the mission and everything within
They’re going to put a plaque right where it’s been
God have mercy on their souls and all their wretched skin
Cause they’re tearing down the mission again

I remember wakening, the incense as it burned
The body and the chalice all in turn
But the Father, Son and Holy Ghost aren’t offered anymore
Just rosaries and postcards at the door

Cause we’re tearing down the mission again and everything within
They’re going to put a plaque right where it’s been
God have mercy on our souls and all our wretched skin
Cause we’re tearing down the mission again
